A library for rural Mekeo School

Wednesday, June 30, 2021

“This facility will enhance and contribute to the education of our children. We are trying to meet the required infrastructure needed and BSP has come to our aid, said St Paul’s Day High School Chairman Joe Mega, during the handover ceremony of the school’s library on Saturday 26th June, 2021.

BSP Financial Group Ltd (BSP) Boroko Branch Team was at Veifa’a Village, located in West Mekeo in the Kairuku-Hiri District of Central Province, where they handed over the school’s new library.

“Thank you BSP for recognising the importance of a library in our children’s education. We are humbled by BSP’s support towards schools not only in the city but having travelled here with the current road condition; you made it through to the rural Mekeo area,” Mr Mega added.

BSP Boroko Branch Manager Ruby Patu and St Paul's Day High School Head Teacher Edmond Kumaira cut ribbon to the new school Library

The library project took 3 months to complete at a cost of K30, 000. BSP upgraded an old classroom, converting it into a library and donated books and shelves including a solar-powered computer.

A proud Head Boy, John Cornelius Kavo said: “Thank you for our library, the donation of our library shelves, as well as many library books. We are more than happy because today we have extra materials to do our research. It will also encourage us to develop reading habits and improve our English. Once again we thank you for your generosity.”

“The school status was upgraded last year from Primary to High School taking Grades 4 to 10 students and with such, we needed more infrastructure,” said the Principal Edmond Kumaira.

“We needed a lot of infrastructure development like library, Science and Computer labs, all those to give the best to our students. Therefore, we would like to thank BSP for taking the initiative to sponsor our Library building, which is a first of its kind in this community. We appreciate and thank you for that. A library is the engine room to any Primary and High School. You have provided that engine room,” reiterated Mr Kumaira.

A former student of the school and BSP staff Odette Maino was proud and happy to be back at the school for the project handover. “Coming out from this school, you have to give something back to this school, and that’s what I wanted to do so thank you very much BSP for giving us this Community Project and it’s the first of its kind.”

BSP Boroko Branch Manager Ruby Patu at the handover ceremony said while BSP stands as a Corporate Organisation “each of our staff is a part of a Community. These Community Projects and others shows BSP’s commitment not only to be the best financial service provider but we are ensuring that our customers and stakeholders are looked after from the community level up.”

The Boroko Branch team not only delivered a new library for the school, its Branchless team travelled ahead to Veifa’a on Thursday 24th June, 2021, and assisted customers in this remote part of West Mekeo with Account Opening and Mobile Banking Registration.
