The Port Moresby General Hospital (POMGEN) Dental Clinic, a vital healthcare and training facility serving up to 100 patients daily, received a significant upgrade to its sterilisation infrastructure.
BSP, through its People & Culture Strategic Business Unit, undertook a community project to renovate the Sterilisation Room at POMGEN ‘s Dental Clinic. This space, previously an open transition room for cleaning equipment, has been transformed into a secure, closed, and optimised facility, complete with new workbenches and sorting cabinets. This upgrade vastly improves the overall management and maintenance required for a clean and safe work environment.
The enhancement directly supports POMGEN’s mission to deliver a quality standard of oral healthcare while ensuring the safety of both patients and staff. Maintaining cleanliness and the proper sterilisation of instruments is crucial for executing safe practice in all procedures.
“Oral Health Care is a growing concern for many Papua New Guineans; we see an increase in demand for dental services treating issues like mouth cancer, tooth decay, and basic oral care,” said Dr. Naomi Asing, the Clinic Coordinator. “This contribution has a significant impact on our daily operations and our ability to ensure our equipment meets safety standards, allowing our patients to be attended to with the best care they deserve.”
Dr. Asing also highlighted the project’s extended benefits; “The renovation offers dual advantages, extending the impact of the investment: it will continue to serve as a crucial training ground for dental students, developing skilled healthcare professionals, and the improved Sterilisation Room will be utilised by other hospital departments for their equipment maintenance.”
BSP’s People & Culture Strategic Business Unit officially witnessed the handover of this worthy community project, which was completed at an overall cost of K30,000.
Speaking at the ceremony, Head of People and Culture PNG, Ms. Esther Usurup-Haro, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to partner with the POMGEN Dental Clinic. She emphasised that this project showcases BSP’s commitment not only as a bank championing prosperity for the South Pacific but also as a leader in giving back to the community where changes can impact a greater public and leave lasting improvements.
BSP’s Community Projects are undertaken nationwide by its Branches and Strategic Business Units (SBU) as a way for staff to contribute meaningfully back to the community. This initiative focuses on key areas including Education, Health, Sports, Environment, and other community initiatives.
