BSP Continues Lifesaving Partnership with Operation Open Heart Foundation

BSP Financial Group Limited (BSP) has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of Papua New Guineans with a grant of K100, 000 to the Operation Open Heart (OOH) Foundation to support its 2025 cardiac surgical missions and medical training programs.

The donation was officially presented today at Port Moresby General Hospital, continuing BSP’s 25-year partnership with the Foundation. Since 2002, BSP has contributed over K2.5 million towards the program, demonstrating the Bank’s commitment to strengthening communities through access to quality healthcare and critical services.

BSP Group General Manager – Corporate Affairs & Community, Hari Rabura, acknowledged the significant impact of the Foundation’s work over the past three decades.

“This contribution reflects more than just financial support. It is a reflection of our shared belief in the power of access – access to quality healthcare, access to skilled professionals, and access to life-saving treatment. Through this partnership, we’re giving Papua New Guineans a second chance at life,” Ms Rabura said.

Last year, BSP donated over K292, 500 towards the purchase of a Demo Vivic Ultrasound device to support the Foundation’s diagnostic capabilities. The donation aligned with BSP’s 2024 Community Project theme focused on improving health outcomes through the provision of essential medical equipment.

The 2025 grant will support up to 30 cardiac surgeries, to be performed by both local and international specialists. These surgeries are expected to have life-changing impacts on individuals and families, restoring hope and futures across the country.

In addition to surgical missions, BSP’s support will contribute to the Foundation’s Medical Training Programs. This includes hands-on training and workshops for local medical professionals. In 2025, eight healthcare workers are set to undergo upskilling in advanced cardiac care – helping to build long-term local capacity and sustainability in PNG’s health system.

“Operation Open Heart is one of the most successful medical partnerships in PNG. It has not only saved over 1,500 lives but also upskilled countless healthcare workers. We are proud to support the Foundation in delivering its 2025 goals and building a stronger, healthier Papua New Guinea,” Ms Rabura added.

Kathy Johnston – Operation Open Heart Foundation Chairlady delivering her remarks during the presentation.

Operation Open Heart Foundation Chairlady Kathy Johnston said for 25 years, BSP has been more than just a supporter, they’ve been a lifeline.

“Their unwavering commitment has helped us bring hope, healing, and second chances to countless Papua New Guineans. Every heartbeat saved is a testament to their generosity, and we are forever grateful for the difference they continue to make,” Ms Johnston said.

“BSP has supported this initiative over the past 25 years, their contribution has helped save the lives of many Papua New Guineans and we are always thankful for their support,” Johnston said.

BSP continues to invest in initiatives that create lasting change in communities across PNG and the Pacific. The Bank’s partnership with Operation Open Heart remains a cornerstone of its community investment in health – reaffirming that together, we are not just saving lives; we are building a healthier future for all Papua New Guineans.
