About the role:
This role is pivotal in strengthening the effectiveness, quality, and strategic maturity of the Internal Audit function while providing independent assurance across the Group’s Shared Services portfolios. Working closely with the Group Chief Auditor (GCA), the role supports enterprise-wide audit strategy, audit quality assurance, stakeholder engagement, and delivery of high-impact assurance.
Key Deliverables:
- Assist the GCA in developing and implementing the annual, risk-based audit strategy and plan, ensuring alignment with the bank’s objectives and risk profile.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the GIA division, ensuring optimal efficiency, process improvements, innovation and productivity.
- Coordinate the GIA activities and plans with other internal (e.g., Risk and Compliance functions) and external assurance providers (e.g., external auditors, regulators) to ensure proper coverage and minimise duplication of effort.
- Manage the GIA unit’s budget, resource planning, and allocation, advising the GCA when resources are inadequate to cover the risk profile.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor a Quality Assurance and Improvement Program (QAIP) that covers all aspects of the GIA function, in line with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (IIA Standards) and relevant banking regulations.
- Ensure that all audit work, from planning to reporting and follow-up, is consistently of a high quality and in line with professional standards.
- Coordinate and manage the external quality assessment of the GIA function, which must be conducted by a qualified, independent reviewer at least every 3-5 years.
- Assist GCA to establish and enforce policies and procedures to guide the internal audit function, ensuring staff adhere to the highest ethical standards and professional conduct (e.g., confidentiality, integrity, objectivity).
- Act as a key liaison between the GCA, the Audit Committee, the Board of Directors, senior management, and departmental heads.
- Prepare and consolidate departmental reports, presentations, and management information for the Audit Committee and Executive Management, ensuring they are clear, concise, and timely.
- Facilitate effective communication of audit findings and recommendations to management, tracking the implementation of corrective action plans.
- Manage relationships with external auditors and regulators, coordinating information requests and ensuring alignment on key areas of risk and coverage.
- Support the GCA in recruiting, hiring, and retaining a high-performing and professionally qualified audit team.
- Coordinate capacity building needs and propose training and development programs to ensure auditors have the necessary skills and knowledge of industry developments and auditing techniques.
- Oversee the performance management process for the audit team, ensuring clear objectives are set and feedback is provided.
- Lead the Shared Services audit portfolio within Group Internal Audit, setting the scope, and priorities and ensuring alignment of audit plans to Enterprise-Wide Risk Registers, regulatory requirements, and emerging risks.
- Oversee planning, execution, and high-quality reporting of audits, clear root-cause analysis and practical recommendations across all shared services (People & Culture, Finance & Strategy, Financial Crime, Operational Risk, Corporate & Community).
- Ensure audit work adheres to high standards and the IIA’s International Professional Practices Framework.
- Monitor and follow up on timely implementation and closure of management remediation actions, escalating significant issues and delays as needed.
- Provide proactive insights to the GCA on risk trends and emerging risks.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory developments, and market practices to ensure proactive coverage.
- Challenge management assessments to ensure proper risk identification.
Essential Qualifications, Professional Skills & Experience:
- University Degree in Accounting (or similar field e.g. Finance or Banking) – preferred.
- Member of the IIA with CIA and/or CPA qualification or currently undertaking studies – preferred
- Exceptional organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and manage stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Technical skills in Compliance/Legislation
- In-depth knowledge of banking laws, regulations, and corporate governance principles.
- Sound understanding of Data Analytics & information technology
- Skills in establishing and implementing Audit Quality Assurance & Improvement programs (QAIPs) or similar.
- A minimum of 10 years’ prior management experience or leadership support role within the financial services sector, leading a team of at least 5 staff.
- A minimum of 5 years prior audit and/or 10-15+ years’ banking/ finance industry experience. Prior audit experience in the banking or financial industries would be beneficial.
- Sound knowledge of audit standards & internal control regulations.
- Well-developed & sound communication skills both oral & written
- Experience in planning, controlling and managing audit programs, staff and administration functions.
