Business Controller - Retail

Position Details

About the Role

The position is based in Port Moresby and reports to the Senior Business Controller Retail. The incumbent will be responsible support the senior strategic finance partner to the Retail business unit by delivering financial insights, performance analysis, and forward-looking recommendations that drive operational and commercial decision-making. The role supports Retail leadership in achieving financial targets through effective budgeting, forecasting, business case evaluation, and performance reporting, while fostering a culture of accountability and data-driven decision-making.

Key Deliverables

  • Assist in the monthly Financial Statements – including P&L statements, Loan Volume and Interest Income Analysis, Deposit Volume and Interest Expense Analysis.
  • Assist in preparing the Monthly Executive Pack – drafting commentary for Business Highlights, Variance Analysis and Strategic Imperatives reporting.
  • Assist in preparing the Annual Budgets, periodic reforecasts; Sensitivity Analysis; Ad Hoc Analyses.
  • Stewardship Review packs, Retail Balance Sheet reconciliations, review integrity and accuracy of Retail Fixed Asset registers.
  • Administer the control framework around Retail SBU operational activities; Loan and Term Deposit Interest Pricing; Review Administrative Policy for Retail SBU.
  • Channel, customer, Branch, segment and product profitability. Assist in developing and maintaining dashboards and allocation methodologies.
  • End of month accruals and monthly journals.
  • Budget variance commentaries.
  • Ensure basic adherence to general accounting principles in recognition of income and expense and balance sheet items.
  • Timely and accurate production of all reports.
  • Preparation of the Retail SBU Board report.
  • Capital expenditure analysis and close consultation with project managers and sponsors on cost itemization and capitalization of projects and calculation of project ROI.
  • Provide analysis to assist product pricing.
  • Provide the administrative and operational expense control framework for Retail SBU.
  • Assist GCFO/Support GM and management for adhoc tasks when required.
  • Staff supervision and management over Retail Business Controller team Business Analyst.

Essential Qualifications, Professional/Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelors (or higher) Degree Accounting, Finance or equivalent.
  • Professional certification with CPA PNG.
  • Excellent management accounting and cost accounting skills.
  • Excellent numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Budget and forecast experience.
  • Profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow preparation and interpretation.
  • Understanding of key performance ratios.
  • A high standard of time management and self- organizational skills.
  • A high standard of listening and communication skills, in the written form, in speech, and in face-to-face situations.
  • An awareness of BSP and strategic objectives.
  • A high standard of report presentation skills (Excel, Powerpoint, Word). The ability to present complex issues in a clear and concise manner.
  • High standard of technical proficiency in the use of MS Office productivity tools.
  • A high standard of technical proficiency in the use of accounting software or General Ledger system.
  • Excellent personal presentation attributes.
  • Basic programming language understanding: python, SQL or equivalent.
  • At least three years management or financial accounting experience in the financial services industry or the profession, or five years senior accounting experience in another industry.
  • Staff supervision experience.
