K50, 000 boosts to Surfing Association PNG

The Surfing Association Papua New Guinea Inc (SAPANG) have secured the naming rights sponsorship from Bank South Pacific (BSP) with K50,000 commitment to staging the 2019 BSP SAPNG National Surfing Titles / Oceania Surfing Cup Selection Trials, to be staged at the Pyramid Board Riders Club, Taurama West, on 19th and 20th October, 2019.


SAPNG President and Co-Founder and Vice President of Oceania Surfing Federation, Andrew C. Abel, ML said that the surfing championship event will select out of SAPNG's ten affiliated surf clubs, twelve of SAPNG's top short board riders (male and female) to send to Fiji to compete against the best in the Oceania region. The selection trials will also include longboard division.

"The event will run 30 minute heats throughout the two-day event, subject to the swells and tides. Anyone interested to watch these surfing selections under international surfing association competition (ISA) rules are welcome to come to Pyramid Board Riders Club at Taurama for what promises to be a fun day," said Mr Abel.

In presenting the sponsorship, BSP Head of Marketing & PR, Gorethy Semi, said that this is the first time BSP is partnering with the surfing sport directly and is happy to do that for a number of reasons.

"At BSP we pride ourselves with our core value Community and the sport of surfing not only develops the sport of surfing but contributes a lot to the community where the competition(s) are held, be it teaching kids to surf, providing the avenue to promote awareness on social issues affecting our communities such as violence against women, contributing to the local businesses and promoting our SME and of course this sport is one of those driving tourism in the country," said Ms Semi.
